I've found that no matter how much I teach parents the tools of positive discipline, communication & relationship building, if the parent is unhappy nothing good will stick. We all know that for us to give the best to our kids we have to make sure we have given the best to ourselves first. It's a case of the proverbial "Attention all passengers: Please fit your own oxygen mask before trying to help your child with theirs". It's almost impossible to stay calm, grounded and planted firmly in the role of captain (parent) of the ship if inside ourselves we are unhappy, depleted or all over the place.
Sadly we are often the last person we think to take care of once we have children and yet if we ignore our own needs and desires and deplete ourselves there is nothing to share with those who love and need us. If we want our children to grow up happy then we absolutely need to model for them what a happy person looks like!
So ideally the first step in being a better, more positive parent always has to start with our relationship with ourself. Only once we are living our truth and acting from a happy heart can we be the best role model for our children and be able to implement positive parenting.
